Weekender - 4/30/2010 - 5/2/2010

Week-END, Week-END, Week-END! (Chant with me now, people, and feel the weekend love spreading throughout the Mile High City!)
I love the weekend so much! This weekend is extra special for me, as I welcome my nephew Vaughn to his mommy's (my twin sissy) home state for the first time in his sweet little life. Also, we are celebrating the fact that my husband has been on this planet for 40 years, as of this weekend, and that means I will be playing hostess this weekend. I love playing hostess. LOVE!
So what can you do that is fun and frugal around town this weekend?

4/30 - Downtown for Lunch on Friday? Check out the What to Wear Fashion Show at the Pavilions starting at 11:30. Make a donation to Dress for Success to snag some valuable coupons and be entered to win an hour with a personal stylist. Or just watch the show - 6 regular folks agreed to be styled for upcoming Denver events, and then show their looks off for all the lunchtime lookie-loos in a show on the Pavilions escalator!

It is the annual Denver treecycle mulch give away from 8a.m-3p.m. There are several sites where Denver residents can go and pick up as much mulch as needed. Bring your own shovels and containers, please. Check here for locations and rules.

5/1 - The Home Depot Kids Workshop project is a really cute little picket fence planter this month. You and the kiddo can build one between 9a.m. and noon at Home Depot Locations. See their website or call your local store for details.

Sunflower Market Double Ad Wednesday Preview

Tomorrow is Double Ad Wednesday at SF Market and I would love to take a good long look with ya, Dealers.

Alas - The home desktop caught a version of the dreaded "XP Internet 2010" virus/malware/crap-I-don't-know-about thingy, and somehow it has fallen on me to clean it up. (Cyber- Chivalry is dead at The Tree House, peeps.)

So check out both the ads here - note those uber-cheap pork country ribs if you dig crock-pot BBQ goodness, btw.
Make a list, make a plan, and head over tomorrow to save big at Sunflower Market on Double Ad Wednesday!

New Bagel Coupon on FB

Einstein Bros just released a new coupon good for a free bagel AND shmear over on FB.
Slow to load right this second because everyone is grabbing it - but grab one when you can!

Knowledge is Power!

Kumi Naidoo, executive director of Greenpeace International, will speak at the University of Denver (DU) Monday, April 26 at 6 p.m. in Lindsay Auditorium in Sturm Hall. You can go here to see more info and to register. The event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited.

Live near a Pretzelmaker?

If so, lucky you - it is National Pretzel Day, and they are ready and waiting to give you a free pretzel. Check out their website for all the details - be prepared, if you get a stickler, you may have to sing for your snackage. Not that you'd have to ask twice to get me to belt out "Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Be Cowboys" in the Aurora Mall for free pretzel. I'd wear a 10 gallon hat and my mom's turkey platter as a belt buckle if they threw in the cheese sauce for dipping. (Someone want to call and ask about that for me? No? Dang.)

Weekender - April 23, 2010

Happy Friday, Dealers - lovely weather we are having, eh?

Meh. I like a little rain, but being a Colorado Native, I am looking for the weather to change like, every 15 minutes, so even a few stormy days leave me feeling a little Seasonal Affective-y.

HOWEVER - the weekend is upon us, and no amount of moisture can change that glorious fact, so lets find some fun and frugal things to do, m'kay?

4/17-4/25 - Don't forget, admission to all National Park is free through this weekend, as they celebrate National Parks Week! Check out all of Colorado's fabulous National Parks here.

Farmer's Markets:

I have to say, the weather is making me think that the "indoor-y-ness" of DUH's weekly market is a front runner this week!

Denver Urban Homesteading's market has been my favorite Weekender topic for a while now, and there is NO reason not to show this market the love just because the outdoor varieties are starting back up. Saturdays 9am-2pm.

Boulder County Farmers' Market - Saturdays 8am-2pm.

Jeff Yeager is my financial hero

Check out the Yahoo/ US News and World Report interview with Jeff Yeager here.
To me, what this guy says just flat out makes good sense, (I am huge fan of his observations on truly green living vs conspicuous consumption of expensively green products.)

Also, if you have never read The Not So Big House , which he mentions, I highly recommend it.

I am not a big fan of running out and spending money on books to teach you to save money - seems counterproductive to me, but I might just give Mr. Yeager's book a gander at the library. From what I see in this interview, it would be well worth a read.

Weekender

Hooray for the weekend!! We made it past tax day, 1/2 way through April, and through one VERY windy week (small dog warning - weight down your fluff-balls, boys and girls!)

So, let's get our weekend on, shall we?

4/16 - This week's installment of Meininger Art Supply Store's Kids Art Club looks extra fun because you get to build bugs out of Sculptey Oven Bake Clay (I always loved clay!) The class runs from 4:30 - 5:30 on Friday evening and materials and instruction are free! See their website for all the information.

_____________________________________

4/16 - For the Grown Ups tonight, a real treat at Tony's Market Bistro (in the Broadway Tony's Market Location.) From 6pm-9pm, Hazel Miller will be crooning a free show in the Bistro. This is going to be crowded, you probably want to head over early and grab a seat, but it is Hazel Miller, people. She is a Colorado insitution and well worth the adoring crowd. (The first time I saw her, she was belting out some of Big Head Todd and the Monsters' tunes with Todd Park Mohr and the gang at a show at Red Rocks and she had that place screaming its collective head off. Girl can sing.) Get there if you can. Super, super serious.

____________________________________

4/17-4/18 - Ever passed a Denver building and wondered "what is the story with that place?" or thought "I would love to see the inside of that building!"? Well this weekend is your chance to indulge your curiosity! Doors Open Denver is a weekend event celebrating Denver's interior spaces and offering free access to great architecture all over the city! From 10am - 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, all kinds of spaces are throwing open their doors and letting the public take a peak. _____________________________________

4/17/4/18 - MileHigh Marketplace hosts it's GreenMarket Festival to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day this weekend, and for just the $3.00 cost of admission to the MarketPlace (kids under 12 are free,) you can enjoy live music, educational exhibits, AND free or low cost recycling of all those tough-to-recycle items you have laying around the house. (Grab the crusty paint and car batteries!) Go to the Marketplace's website for all the details.
_____________________________________
4/17-4/25 This weekend kicks off National Parks Week, which means that starting Saturday admission to all National Parks is free! There will also be special activities and promotions going on all week, along with volunteer opportunities and even programs in honor of Earth day on April 22! See a full list of all the parks and historic trails and sites (Colorado has a lot to choose from) and the events being held here, and get your nature on!

4/17 - Ahhh, good old NCAR (site of many fun field trips of my youth, employer of security guard who found me when my 16 year old self rolled my truck into a cow pasture - that is now Flatirons Crossing - on the backroads of my youth... but I digress) NCAR's Wild Bear Center for Nature Discovery kicks off Earth Week on Saturday with a day of free activities for the whole family from 10am-4pm. Check out all the info here and go get in on the fun!____________________________________
4/17 - Lowes Build and Grow clinic this Saturday (10am-11am, various Lowes locations) is a fun one - you and Jr. can build a planter box just in time for spring, but this one has a twist: a clear plastic front that lets you see as roots grow down and plants grow up! Go here to find a location near you and register.

tax day treats!

Ok, so I think we have all heard that if you bring in your own cup to Starbucks tomorrow, they will give you a free drip coffee and that alone is probably enough to get me out of bed and down the road towards the S-bucks (and then, hopefully, on to work) tomorrow morning. HOWEVER, check out Yahoo's list of other places offering a little tax day love to ease our "pay The Man" pain: full list here.

No duck and cover needed

Heads up, front range! They are testing the tornado alarms on Wednesday - no need to stuff the dog under your arm and head for the cellar with Auntie Em (although with all this wind lately, I have been fighting the urge to take the broomstick for a spin. I'll get you, my pretty!)
Here's all the info from 9News.

A little bit of moolah, a LOT of fun, a great cause

Hot tip from a beautiful gal who I know and love as Sunnytrees - check out the Hopscotch Hussle to benefit WeeCycle this Sunday. I didn't want to wait for the Weekender to talk about this one - it looks like a blast for the whole family and all proceeds go to benefit WeeCycle - an organization that helps low income families gain access to new and gently used baby gear free of charge.
Here are all the details - don't be late for this very important (and sure to be a blast) date.

Safeway Weekend Sale

Safeway is having a weekend sale (prices good Saturday and Sunday only) with a couple of things worth mentioning - $1.59 lb b/s Chicken Breasts (4 lb frozen bags*) and extra lean (93%) Ground Beef at $1.99lb (I have seen this go cheaper, but this is a pretty darn good price on lean burger.)

So much!

Weekender

It is going to be freaking beautiful this weekend, Dealers!! (I know because Ashton Altieri told me so this morning, and Ashton would NEVER lie to me. Evah!)
So all bets are off for me when it comes to indoor activities for the next two days, I admit it. There was talk of a new pillow-buying expedition with The Hub, and I know that he will spend plenty of time in front of coverage of The Masters, but as for me - I will be high above Gov's Park on the Tree House patio with a few Coronas and my little black solar panel of a dog, just soaking in the Colorado sun. Mmmmmm.

Should you desire more from your weekend, there are lots of fun and frugal happenings around the Mile High City this weekend:

4/9 - Not off to the opening day madness in LoDo? Meininger Art Supply's Kids' Art Club has another Friday afternoon offering this afternoon beginning at 4:30.
