Wow - that whole week just kind of slipped away from me in a haze, and it is Weekender time again already!
This weekend for us is all about completing registries and heading for the car seat inspection station at our hospital to make sure that I wrenched that thing down into my seat correctly. (Gotta keep the Cub safe and sound in his ride!)

What else is up around town (aside of more BEAUTIFUL weather that makes me so happy, of course)?

3/18-3/19 - This one is a whopper, people - it is time for the Just Between Friends Consignment Sale (actually, they call it an "Event,") at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. It is a BIG one - lots of families selling - lots of deals to be had. Go here for all the info on location, hours, etc.

3/18- Santa Fe Arts District hosts 3rd Friday events (the calmer, less crowded answer to bustling 1st Fridays around town.) Perfect weather to stroll around and pop in to galleries to meet artists, snack on some food, and sip on some wine in a relaxed atmosphere.

3/19 - If you have safety on the brain like I do lately, you can head for Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City and take part in a free 45 minute First Aid Training and CPR basics class (not for certification,) with classes starting at 11AM, noon, 1PM and 2PM. This is a great way to brush up or start getting a feel for the basics! Giffords and all of those involved in the Tuscon Tragedy.

3/19 - Is your little one crazy for Dinosaurs? Well then head for Dinosaur Ridge in Morrison this Saturday at 10 am for Dinosaur Detectives, Footprint Frenzy. WOO HOO for a glorious weekend of fabulous Colorado spring weather!! I am so excited - weather likes this can even make running errands a pleasure!
This weekend we also get to take our hospital tour and do all of our pre-registration forms, our little Cheese Curd's EDD is less than 5 weeks away!

What else is up around town that won't leave you with an empty wallet? (Look at all the choices on Saturday! Better leave Sunday open for recovery!)

3/12 - Break out the green and prepare to start the St Patrick's Day celebration a bit early - this Saturday is the annual St Patty's day parade in Denver. It kicks off at 10 am at 27th and Blake and winds its way through LoDo and Ballpark before finishing at Coors Field! This one is ALWAYS a sight to be seen for all ages - with stepdancers, bands and bagpipers, and crazy floats, ours is actually one of the biggest St Patrick's Day parades in the country! 3/12 - Saturday is a free admission day at the Colorado Railroad Museum! This is a great one for the whole family and they only do 3 free days a year, so take advantage of the beautiful weather (there are outdoor portions, so a nice day is ideal for getting the most out of your visit,) and go check it out! The King Soopers (yes, you know the nick name, the one at 9th and Corona,) is still having some great deals in honor of their grand reopening.
I am still in mourning over the old floor plan that I knew with my eyes closed, but it has been worth it to skip my usual trip to the fancy new (complete with Liquor section) KS on Leetsdale and hit up this neighborhood stand by just to get the deeper discounts for the grand reopening.
This week (through March 15) B/S chicken breasts are $1.69 lb at that location only! This is "shameless hording" pricing for me - so look out if you see a little blonde pregnant lady filling her cart!

I continue my marathon of baby preparation this weekend, starting some big batches of food to split into freezable portions, and washing all of the itty-bitty cutie little clothes I have received so that the little guy will have snuggly soft and fresh duds to spit up on when he arrives. :)

Hooray for the weekend! We have another jam-packed few days on our hands around The Tree House this weekend - part of me can't believe I am saying this (you know, that part of you that always feels like you just finished middle school last week and can't POSSIBLY be an adult,) but I am going to a baby shower this weekend FOR ME!! I am so excited - I love the idea of being surrounded by a bunch of women - with all their intuition, wisdom, and experience - ready to guide you on your path to being a mom. FABULOUS!!
It also means that MIL is in town this weekend, as is Dr. Sissy and smushy-love nephew Vaughny! The Weekender is posting early this week so I can enjoy the family fun!

So, what's to do around Denver on the cheap this weekend? Here's a few ideas:

2/25 - Turn on your heart light! February is National Heart Health Month -and you can help care for your ticker by heading to Centennial Medical Plaza (14200 E Arapahoe Rd) from 8am-11am on Friday for free heart screenings, including Cholesterol levels, BMI, blood pressure, and heart disease and stroke risk assessment! 2/25- Those who know me know that I am oddly passionate about knowing your cuts of meat. One of the best ways to save at the grocery store is to know what to look for in a good cut of meat, and how to make the most out of some of the more inexpensive cuts available. 2/18-2/21 - Do you go gaga over a wagging, panting, furry little face like I do? Well then the Stock Show Complex is the place for you this weekend, as it plays host to The Denver Dog Show! 5 bucks is all it costs for adults, and kiddos and seniors are free! It isn't just about the judging, either - there will be info sessions on various breeds, both introductory and advanced, vendors showing off their doggie products, and lots of other family fun. As many of you probably already know, the Denver Public Library is currently partway though a week long closure of all branches due to upgrades to their systems. The library offers so many fun and fabulous activities and resources free of charge, I am sure we all can't wait for the (new and improved) libraries to open again on Feb 3rd.

1/29- The University of Colorado Museum of Natural History will be hosting a free viewing of "Bee Movie" starting at 2pm on Saturday. The film will be shown in the museum's bee exhibit, and their will be a short talk after as well. (That is edu-tainment, people!) I have been TERRIBLE about talking local grocery deals lately - but I was recently talking with a friend about what I think is a good price for b/s chicken breasts.

I will tell you, I NEVER pay over 1.88 a pound for b/s chicken breasts, and really I like to keep it lower than that if I can. When I see a good price, I stock up on as much as my budget will allow for.

This week at Safeway b/s chicken breasts are 1.79 lb.

3 DAY WEEKEND!!! (Well, for some of us anyway - hope you are included!) I am so happy at the prospect of a 3 day weekend, I lack words to express my joy. The Hub has some errands planned for us, and I am perfectly willing to surrender a portion of my normal weekend to his plans since I get a bonus day to do whatever I want!

1/15-1/17 - It's the first free admission day(s) of 2011 in National Parks around the country this year, and Colorado has some great ones! Winter is an amazing time to Enjoy Rocky Mountain National Park, for example - it is a very popular snowshoeing and winter camping destination! I LOVE the stock show! It's the farm heritage in my family sneaking out in me, I guess - because it is one of my favorite things about Denver.
And one of the coolest Stock Show traditions is the annual parade - there is nothing more Colorado to me than a bunch of livestock heading through the middle of downtown!

This year's parade kicks off tomorrow at noon at Union Station and heads up 17th street towards the financial district - don't miss it!

Since I have been feeling like it was one day later all week (this SHOULD be Friday, am I right?) I figured I would roll out the Weekender a day early so we can all start planning a super fun Mile High weekend! Fun and Frugal for us this weekend means heading for the Rock Bottom sometime to use a Gift Certificate I won earlier this year that is about to expire - Hooray for free Rock Bottom!!

Ahhh weekend. I am proud to say that I actually have all my Christmas shopping done, and I plan to kick back and watch DVRed holiday specials from ABC Family with a big cup of cocoa (while stirring with a Candy Cane, of course.) Oh wait - at some point I also have to muck out the Guest bedroom and magically transform it into a place for a baby to lay his sweet head, (with apologies to the writer of Away in a Manger, natch.)

On Monday, December 6 at 8 p.m., the Colorado Bartenders' Guild will hold its sixth annual holiday toy drive at Oak at 14th in Boulder, (1400 Pearl Street), at 8pm.
Bring an unwrapped toy (or more than one) to dontate - for each one you bring, you will get a free drink! And Oak will be serving up some complimentary food to accompany your free drinks! Toys will be donated to the Salvation Army (and the bartenders are generously donating their tips, as well!)

It's the weekend! I confess, I will probably spend mine relaxing on the sofa and gazing at the twinkly lights on our tree - but that doesn't mean there aren't lots of fun activities that won't break the bank happening this weekend!

12/3-12/4 - Ooooo, it's Parade of Lights weekend!!! Time to bundle the kiddos and head downtown for this Denver holiday tradition. The parade kicks off at 8pm on Friday and 6pm on Saturday - go here to get the parade route and for more details on this great free family event!

12/3 - Santa will be flying into Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport (Jeffco to those of us who grew up near there,) at 6pm on Friday in a helicopter (reindeer are resting up for "the big show" - you understand.) Ahh, the weekend. 11/19 - Do you bleed Black and Gold? Well then the Pearl St Mall is the only place for you to be Friday at 7pm, to cheer on the Buffs and get pumped up in advance of tomorrow's home game! Hello snow, welcome back!
We have lots of exciting plans for the weekend, broken up with periods of rest and relaxation - it's the recipe for a perfect weekend, in my humble opinion! Friday is ultrasound day, and I can't wait to see our little bambino again! Friday night The Hub is also exercising his current favorite way to "make" dinner by ordering us Cosmos pizza (and bread sticks with Nacho cheese dipping sauce for me! MMMMMMM)
Also this weekend we are getting a visit from Dr. Sissy, BIL, and Vaughny the world's greatest nephew - can't wait to spend some time with them!

-10/29-10/31 - Bass Pro Shops is pulling out all the stops for Halloween weekend, offering free crafts, snacks, trick or treating and other family fun all weekend long! Go here for details. (BTW - I here Santa will be spending his early November at Bass, so if you are looking to get in with the big guy early, be on the lookout starting VERY soon.)

-10/29- Schlessman YMCA (2625 S. Colorado Blvd) gets the fun started Friday evening at 5:30 with a "Trunk or Treat" party! Play games, tour a haunted house, do crafts, and - starting at 7:30 - trick or treat through their lit up and decorated parking lot filled with decorated cars passing out candy from their trunks!

-10/30 - the Fall Family Festival at the Medical Center of Aurora is a great free event for the whole family. Along with Trick or Treating, there are lots of other activities - you can even get your flu shot for $25.00 while you are there! See here for more info.
-10/30 - Saturday from 1-5pm, Downtown Littleton merchants displaying an orange poster will be passing out candy to little trick-or-treaters, so head for the Historic district with your little ghouls and get in on this safe and fun trick or treat alternative! See the website for more info.

-10/30 - The Gardens on Havana in Aurora are getting in on the fun from 1-5pm Saturday too. Yep, I am quite the DiD slacker, and (as you can see from yesterday's post) I am considering some changes in bloggy-land. Weekenders continue - and there is lots to do around town this weekend that is fun and frugal! Also, get out and take advantage of those outdoor farmer's markets (listed at the bottom of the post) as they will be closing up shop soon.
As for us - the weekend before Halloween means just one thing around The Tree House: "Pumpkins for Jesus" - which is what we call our annual trip to Calvary Temple's pumpkin patch to pick out our future jack-o-lantern!

10/15 - Big CU Buffs fan? Then Pearl Street Mall is the place for you Friday evening! Friday nights before home games fans gather on the mall for a parade and pep rally to get ready for Saturday's games! Starting at 7pm, you can join the CU band and cheerleaders, and of course the football team and get pumped up for the game with a parade along the mall and pep rally after in the Daily Camera Parking lot at 11th and Pearl. Gooooooooo BUFFS!

10/16 - If you are itchin' to get into the creepy crawly spooky side of Fall, and head up the mountain on a beautiful Colorado weekend evening, then load the car for Central City (after RSVPing for your spot here) and join in the free lantern lit walking tour of this spooky old mining town. The first tour starts at 7, and tours leave after that every 5-7 minutes until 7:30 - so there is lots of space! If you can't go this weekend, they are also running Saturdays through the end of October. BOOOOO! (Scared ya, didn't I?)

10/16 - Take a journey to the old West at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge's "Refuge Round Up" on Saturday. There will be hayrides and storytelling and crafts and more, all free of charge! Snacks and meals will be available for a small fee, but there is TONS of free fun to be had at this event. Weekend!! I am SOOOOOOO ready for a little R&R! There has been some big goings on around the Tree House lately, which have been greatly contributing to both my love of lazy, activity free weekends AND my lack of posts around here (what with the whole "if I sit down for over 10 minutes, I pretty much fall asleep and it is fine by me" thing I have going on lately.) I hope now that the wonderful truth is out, you will forgive my neglect, Dealers.
So what is up this weekend around town?

10/9 - 10/10 - It is time for the Botanic Gardens annual Pumpkin Fest! Held at the Chatfield location, this one is always a family fave. There are admission costs, but they cover LOTS of activities once you are inside, and this can be a whole day of family fun. Go here for all the information.

10/9 - Want to bring the carnival home? Sign the kiddos up for Lowes Build and Grow clinic this Saturday and they can make a free Fun House Mirror craft project! Go here to find a location near you and register. The clinics run from 10am-11am at local Lowes locations.

10/9 - Aurora's Pumpkin Fest has free admission, AND you can watch the Jack-o-launch, a pumpkin launching contest between teams of creative folks and their pumpkin flinging inventions! All the fun takes place at DeLaney Farm at 170 S. Chambers Road. 10/9 - Sam's Club locations are offering free health screenings at their locations this weekend, no need to be a member! 10/9 - Need MORE family fun? Well the Town Square of Arvada is worth checking out on Saturday! you can enter or just observe scarecrows of all shapes and sizes throughout Olde Town. Bring costumed kids for the parade, navigate the corn maze, find a perfect pumpkin and be sure to vote for your favorite scarecrow. The fun is happening from 10am- 3pm in the Square. 10/2-10/3- First things first - Saturday is a free admission day for the Denver Art Museum, and Sunday is a free admission day at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science (for Colorado residents.) Get the details on both here.

10/1 - It's First Friday in Denver's Art Districts, and what a beautiful evening it is going to be for it!
This article is From Denver Arts Week, but it lists the different districts that host First Friday events, so pick a new area to explore and head out this evening for art and enjoyment. Not sure where to go? Head for the Santa Fe Arts District and stop by the Andrea Li Truck Show at Studio MCG benefiting the Susan G Komen Foundation and browse for a good cause. Bonus? Sample wines from the district's own Art District’s Urban Winery, The Infinite Monkey Theorem! Check the FB page for more details. (Hint there are TONS of great things to see and do in all of the fabulous arts districts on First Fridays, so you can't really go wrong.)

10/2-10/3 - Four Mile Historic Park hosts their annual Pumpkin Harvest Festival this weekend, and it is always a favorite for families looking to get into the Fall spirit! Admission is free and so are lots of activities, so travel back in time to Harvest-time when the West was really wild - play games, listen to music, make a scarecrow, and explore Four Mile House. Another beautiful weekend in the Mile High City - can you believe this weather!? (Can you believe how much that sounded like something an elderly relative would have said! Nice Ker....)
Anyway, this weekend The Hub and I celebrate 6 years of wedded bliss, (I still haven't decided where we are going for dinner that evening,) by doing what all romantic, head-over-heals-in-love married couples do to celebrate these big occassions. We are picking out new bath towels and a new coffee maker! (hubba hubba.)

9/24- Are you taking part in One Book, One Denver and reading The Help? Drooling over all that food? It's the weekend, and in spite of any planned outdoor activities, I know I am not the only one praying for cool, calm, (dare we hope even damp,) weather for the front range this weekend, as we hold our collective breath with eyes on the fire outside of Boulder and creeping ever-closer towards the city limits. My heart goes out to those who have lost their homes, as well as those evacuated, and to the men and women fighting the fire and trying to keep people, pets, and property safe during this scary time. If you are headed into Boulder and beyond this weekend, please remember to heed all notices and requests from authorized personnel so that they can do their jobs.

9/10 - on the not-so-free side of things, I would be remiss to NOT mention that today marks the beginning of the Denver Beer Fest, celebrating all things beer. 9/11-9/12- Belmar hosts its annual Festival Italiano this Saturday and Sunday from 10am - 7pm each day. 9/11- Lowes Build and Grow clinic has a project this Saturday that is SO CUTE, I kind of want to stand on my knees and see if I can pass as a kiddo so I can make one. 9/11- The 8th annual Sunnyside Music Fest is Saturday from 10am - 8pm in Chaffee Park, the music is free, and a portion of proceeds from vendor sales goes to benefit different selected charities each year. 9/3- It's First Friday in Denver's Art Districts, and what a beautiful evening it is going to be for it!

9/3 - The Fancy Tiger hosts a Denver Made show on Friday evening, this time featuring Becky's Buttons and Things, from 7pm-10pm. 9/3- 9/6 - The big bookend festival marking the close of the summer season, A Taste of Colorado takes over Civic Center Park and the surrounding area for the entire 3 day weekend. Though the food prices may seem a bit high (you buy tickets and use those at the booths to purchase your tastes,) the amount of free entertainment to be had is staggering! Free music (including Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, The Four Tops, and even Bret Michaels, among others,) a kids entertainment stage, free craft projects for the kiddos, an area to pan for gold and dig for fossils, and even a tent where you can check the scores of whatever game you aren't watching while you are having fun in the sun! There are also discounted ride wristbands available from 10:30am-3:00 pm (good until 5pm) for those who like to keep their TOC fun in the daylight hours. Lots of fun and frugal things to talk about this Wednesday!

- It is a free admission day at Denver Botanic Gardens for Colorado Residents, and it looks like perfect weather for a stroll around the gardens.

-It is (of course) Double Ad Wednesday at Sunflower Market - check both ads here and shop today to take advantage of deals from both!

-Tonight is the Movie Under the Moon at Governor's Park (the actual park, not the bar,) with the fun kicking off at 6pm. There will be free cotton candy and popocorn, as well as boxed dinners, pizza by the slice, and (best of all) beer and Lunetta Proccessco for sale by Lala's Pizza and Wine bar! Then at 8:30, the movie Bottle Shock will begin. YAY!

8/13 - Now every time I go to Highlands Ranch, I get stuck for at least 45 minutes trying to find my way out. I believe that the town actually conspires to trap city-dwellers until they get exhausted and just decide to buy a house and stay there. (But that is just a theory.) HOWEVER, for a chance to watch Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs on a big screen under the suburban stars, I might just try my luck again. Almost Wednesday already? (Who am I kidding - that is GREAT!! Time to start finding fun stuff to list in the next weekender.)

In the meantime, take a look at the ads for last week and this week at SF Market and shop tomorrow to take advantage of sales from both flyers. The first Hatch Chillies of the season are in (and cheap) and it has me dreaming of cool fall days with a giant vat of spicy green chili heating up the Tree House kitchen. (The first of the season are never the best though, and it is still in the 90s outside. And so I wait.)

Sweet SAH-WEEEET weekend, I am SO happy to see you here at last! I must confess that I will be hunkered down around the big screen this evening, as it is Ingrid Bergman day on TCM's Summer Under the Stars, and tonight is Casablanca. Pass the popcorn and silence the cell phones!

But, not everyone wants to spend their weekend vegging in front of the tube, so what is fun and frugal around the Mile High City this weekend (besides checking out the brand spanking new kids' play area at Cherry Creek Mall - bonus points if someone can tell me where our refurbished giant breakfast food ends up.)

8/6 - It is First Friday in Denver's art districts, with lots great 'hoods to choose from. Go here for a good list of them. (This is from last year's arts week, but all the districts do First Friday too!)

A few highlights:

The Denver Cupcake Truck will be at 1st Friday on Tennyson - Deals in Denver totally PPH's Sean and Denon (and Clementine too,) and their delish confections.

Fashion Denver in the Golden Triangle is hosting a First Friday Carnival with games, face painting, carnival snacks and an after party (21 and over) at the Garage.

The Santa Fe Arts District plays host to a celebration in honor of Andy Warhol's birthday during First Friday this month! Check out all the fun here.

8/6-8/7 - An event after my own heart, the 26th annual Rocky Mountain Book and Paper Fair kicks off Friday with a Friday night preview gala ($10 gets you early access to the fair and includes free wine tastings and live jazz and first crack and the merchandise.)
